DETROIT- WDIV recently researched data regarding Interstate I-75, one of the major highways that runs through Michigan and came up with some surprising results regarding the most frequent crashes, which all happened to be in the Wayne County and Oakland County areas.
The data includes crashes that occurred on the highway from 2019-2023. It is estimated that more than 170,000 vehicles use the highway everyday as it stretches 394 miles through the state of Michigan.
According to the Michigan Traffic Crash Facts Data Query Tool, there are four one-mile long hotspots along I-75 where the most crashes have occurred. Just in that five year span, over 2,457 crashes have occurred.
More than 60% of those crashes occurred in the northbound lanes, with the most crashes happening on Friday between 3 p.m.-7 p.m. Road conditions were a minimal factor in the crashes, with 70% of them occurring when the roads were dry. In fact, the deadliest month appeared to be during the month of June, when warm weather takes over and drivers tend to have erratic driving habits.
The top 4 hot spots are:
1. I-75 between McNichols Rd and 7 Mile Road (North Wayne County)
In that five-year span there were 641 crashes reported on the Michigan Traffic Crash Facts’ Data Query Tool. Two of those crashes were deadly. One person was killed and another was injured in a single-vehicle crash in 2019. One person was killed in a rear-end crash in 2020. The time of the day with the most crashes occurred during rush hour traffic between 5 p.m.-6 p.m.
2. I-75 between 9 Mile Road and I-696 (Southern Oakland County)
