DETROIT—A study into auto insurance premiums has revealed that the City of Detroit has the lowest DUI rate of the 50 largest cities in the U.S.
According to lendingtree.com, Detroit came in with the lowest DUI rate per 1,000 drivers, with only 0.02 percent of them ever receiving a DUI. The second lowest was Washington D.C., coming in at 0.04 percent and Oklahoma City coming in at 0.05 percent.
In comparison, the 3 cities with the highest DUI rates are Raleigh, NC which had a 1.46 percentage rate. Second place went to Sacramento, CA which had a 1.31 percentage. Rounding out the rest of the top 5 was more cities in the State of California, with Los Angeles, San Jose and Bakersfield not far behind.
It appears in Detroit, drivers are avoiding DUI’s because it has the most impact on their insurance rates. Detroit drivers face the highest increases in auto insurance premiums after a DUI. The annual auto insurance premiums with a DUI in Detroit is $13,772. The rate without a DUI is $6,138. That’s a hike of $7,634.
The impact of a DUI for drivers in Detroit is by far the most consequential. Charlotte, NC comes in a distant second with a $4,832 hike. Los Angeles comes in third place with a $4,730 hike.
On average, the total annual increase in auto insurance premiums with a DUI across 50 states is $1,876, which shows just how negatively a DUI in Detroit can impact drivers.
The study also found differences when it comes to the age of an individual who has received a DUI. Gen Z drivers ages 18-26 are the most likely to receive one, with millennials ages 27-42 coming in at a close second.
The rate continues to fall as age (and wisdom) increases. The DUI rate for Gen Xers ages 43 to 58 is 0.23, versus 0.18 among baby boomers ages 59 to 77. However, the rate spikes a bit for the oldest bracket, as the silent generation (ages 78 to 95) is at 0.22 per 1,000 drivers.
DUI rates by vehicle make, has come with some intriguing findings. Cadillac drivers have the highest DUI rate by far at 0.56 per 1,000 drivers, followed by those driving Buicks (0.34) and Fords (0.30). (Also noteworthy: Climate-conscious though they may be, Tesla drivers still land in the top 10, with 0.24 DUIs per 1,000 drivers.)
At the other end of the spectrum, Subaru drivers saw the lowest DUI rate at 0.13 per 1,000. Mercury and Acura tie for second-lowest with a DUI rate of 0.14.
